top 10 left fielders in mlb in 2025
The best left fielders currently in Major League Baseball are a combination of ascending talents, established veterans, and the occasional late-career star. Left field can be a home to subpar outfield defenders who justify a place in the lineup with their bat.
It can also be where former center fielders move to as they age, or where solid defenders are placed if their team has even better options in center and right. Selecting the top 10 for this list was tricky, particularly because so few players have a permanent home in left.
1. Riley Greene
A total of 8.6 career bWAR is very low compared to the top-ranked player at most other positions. Across the last two full seasons, however, Riley Greene has the second-best wRC+ among primary position left fielders and Wyatt Langford is the only current left fielder projected for more fWAR in 2025.
Having been an All-Star for the first time in 2024, Greene has the talent to become a perennial pick for the Midsummer Classic. He’s got the upside to earn MVP votes in the future, as he’s only just beginning his age-24 season on an upwardly mobile Detroit Tigers team.
2. Wyatt Langford
Langford’s major-league track record is even more limited than Greene’s. He posted 3.9 bWAR as a rookie in 2024, though, and is projected to better that mark in the 2025 season, which could see him become the premier left fielder in the big leagues.
With an elite eye, great speed, a plus glove, and top-end bat speed, Langford has all the tools to be an MVP candidate in the future. His numbers at the start of 2025 are even more impressive than we saw in 2024, which sets a foundation for a big year, particularly with his plate discipline.
3. Christian Yelich
Christian Yelich has been the best hitter among left fielders since the start of the 2023 season. Consistently boasting a walk rate north of 12% and featuring next to the league’s premier sluggers in hard-hit rate, Yelich also has plus speed and stole 21 bases in 2024.
The defense is poor at this stage. He’s likely to become a DH within the next year or two if the Milwaukee Brewers put much stock in the advanced statistics. Availability is also in question for the 33-year-old, who missed considerable time in 2021 and 2024.
4. Ian Happ
Ian Happ has forged a very solid career as a Chicago Cub. While he didn’t become the switch-hitting star the Cubs hoped he could become when he was the 28th-ranked prospect in baseball, Happ has amassed almost 20 career bWAR and has never been below average at the plate across a full season.
The profile is similar to Yelich. He walks very frequently, doesn’t strike out much by modern standards, and makes plenty of hard contact. It wouldn’t be a massive surprise if Happ led all left fielders in WAR in 2025.
5. Brandon Nimmo
Just three full-time left fielders are projected for more fWAR than Brandon Nimmo this season. Nimmo, a former center fielder, had a down year in 2024, yet still finished with 23 home runs and 15 stolen bases while walking in 11.6% of his plate appearances.
This could be the start of decline for a player into his 30s. Nimmo’s hard-hit and barrel rates remained high in 2024, however, and injuries haven’t been a factor in the last few years after suffering several long layoffs in his first few years in the big leagues. He’s one of a handful of players to have played 150+ games in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
6. Jackson Chourio
Despite earning MVP votes and registering 3.8 bWAR in 2024, several left fielders are projected to have a better season than Jackson Chourio in 2025. While his speed, defense, and contact-hitting skills put him alongside some of the elite players in those categories, Chourio is clearly more flawed than Greene and Langford.
He’s a long way below the league average in whiff rate and chase rate. Walks are rare. Despite this approach, he still strikes out in well over 20% of his plate appearances. There’s no guarantee Chourio is a multi-time All-Star, even after a stellar rookie year.
7. Steven Kwan
Steven Kwan had a 113 wRC+ across the 2023 and 2024 regular seasons. Hitting only 19 homers over that period limited his offensive ceiling – Kwan is a high-contact, low-strikeout hitter who isn’t going to be threatening the home run record books.
Still, he had just a 10% strikeout rate with a 9.8% walk rate over that period.
Kwan is an extreme archetype in the modern game, with his value coming from defense and a high batting average. He’s not got the upside of some players on this list, but he’s still a very valuable ballplayer for the Cleveland Guardians.
8. Randy Arozarena
Is it harsh to say Randy Arozarena has underwhelmed since winning Rookie of the Year and starring in the postseason? Maybe. After all, he’s amassed 7.6 bWAR across the last three full seasons, crucially demonstrating durability that shouldn’t be taken for granted.
His projected wRC+ is among the best left fielders in the majors, but he’s fallen off a cliff as a defender. His underlying statistics were concerning in 2024 with a substantial drop-off in his barrel rate and xwOBA.
9. Heliot Ramos
A first-time All-Star in 2024, former first-round pick Heliot Ramos broke out in a big way. Ramos finished the season with a 125 OPS+. Notably, that was almost exclusively down to a 1.189 OPS against lefties. He was subpar against righties, which suggests he could become a platoon bat in the future.
Ramos’ bat speed and hard-hit numbers tease that he has 30-homer upside, but he will need to overcome his issues against same-handed pitching. The Giants would surely like to see him be more selective at the plate, too.
10. Colton Cowser
An elite defender with a great arm and coming off a season in which he ranked in the 90th percentile in barrel rate, Colton Cowser could easily be a top three left fielder by the end of this season.
Cowser is prone to strikeouts, but that’s down to swing-and-miss rather than expanding the zone. It would be good to see him pull the ball in the air more frequently, too.
