NBA Power Rankings 3.0: Cavaliers and Warriors Stumble, Celtics and Suns Rise

NBA Power Rankings 3.0: Cavaliers and Warriors Stumble, Celtics and Suns Rise

With January approaching, the NBA landscape looks very different than it did just a month ago. Some preseason contenders are struggling to stay afloat, while a handful of teams are quietly forcing their way into the championship conversation.

Here is where the league stands right now.

30. Washington Wizards (6-23)

Change: Down 1

Washington is exactly what most expected. A rebuilding team playing out the string. The silver lining is flexibility. Veterans like C.J. McCollum and Khris Middleton could fetch useful assets at the deadline as the franchise looks toward the future.

29. Sacramento Kings (7-23)

Change: Down 5

This season has unraveled quickly. Sacramento looks directionless, and it may be time to fully reset. DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Domantas Sabonis are quality players, but the current mix is not working. Tough decisions are coming.

28. Indiana Pacers (6-25)

Change: Neutral

A lost season. Injuries and inconsistency have derailed any momentum from last year. The focus now should be landing a premium draft pick and resetting around Tyrese Haliburton.

27. New Orleans Pelicans (8-24)

Change: Neutral

The record is ugly, but there have been some encouraging signs. Rookies Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears have flashed real potential. The looming question remains Zion Williamson and how, or if, he fits into the long-term plan.

26. Brooklyn Nets (9-19)

Change: Up 4

Brooklyn has been far more competitive than expected. Michael Porter Jr. has been outstanding, averaging a career-high 25.7 points per game. This team plays hard every night and has avoided total collapse.

25. Utah Jazz (11-19)

Change: Up 1

Utah has been feisty despite limited talent. Keyonte George has taken a massive leap and is playing at an All-Star level, averaging nearly 25 points per game. He is becoming a real building block.

24. Milwaukee Bucks (12-19)

Change: Down 13

Without Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee looks lost. The offense stalls, the defense breaks down, and the supporting cast cannot carry the load. If the slide continues, real questions will have to be asked about where this is headed.

23. Charlotte Hornets (11-20)

Change: Up 2

Charlotte has been one of the more enjoyable teams to watch. Rookie Kon Knueppel has exceeded expectations, and Brandon Miller and LaMelo Ball have flashed real chemistry when healthy. The foundation is there.

22. Los Angeles Clippers (9-21)

Change: Down 1

This season has been a mess. A veteran-heavy roster without cohesion or energy, and the added sting of owing draft capital to Oklahoma City. A turnaround feels unlikely.

21. Portland Trail Blazers (12-19)

Change: Down 6

Portland simply lacks top-end talent. Deni Avdija is a quality player, but he cannot be the primary option for a playoff-caliber team. More help is needed.

20. Dallas Mavericks (12-20)

Change: Up 2

Dallas has struggled overall, but rookie Cooper Flagg is starting to emerge. His December scoring surge is a bright spot in an otherwise uneven season.

19. Chicago Bulls (15-15)

Change: Down 5

After a hot start, Chicago has regressed to familiar territory. Mediocre, competitive enough to hover around .500, but not built to truly contend.

18. Memphis Grizzlies (15-16)

Change: Up 5

Despite injuries, Memphis has stayed afloat thanks to depth and effort. This feels like a team destined for the Play-In, but a dangerous opponent who few teams will want to face.

17. Atlanta Hawks (15-17)

Change: Neutral

Atlanta’s struggles coinciding with Trae Young’s return raise questions. Jalen Johnson has been excellent and is trending toward an All-Star nod. The fit around Young remains unresolved.

16. Phoenix Suns (17-13)

Change: Up 4

Phoenix has been a surprise team in the league this year, with Devin Booker and Dillon Brooks leading the team night in and night out. New coach Jordan Ott has been a tremendous hire.

15. Miami Heat (16-15)

Change: Down 2

The definition of average. Miami has lacked consistency, largely due to Tyler Herro’s availability. If Herro stays healthy, this team could climb quickly.

14. Golden State Warriors (16-15)

Change: Down 3

Golden State looks old. The pace is slower, the defense is inconsistent, and Jonathan Kuminga has not taken the leap they needed. A deadline move feels inevitable.

13. Toronto Raptors (18-14)

Change: Up 3

Toronto has cooled off slightly but remains a pleasant surprise. This is a solid playoff team that has already exceeded preseason expectations.

12. Philadelphia 76ers (16-13)

Change: Neutral

Good, not great. Joel Embiid’s limited availability and apparent regression cap this team’s ceiling. They remain competitive but short of true contender status.

11. Cleveland Cavaliers (17-15)

Change: Down 8

A major disappointment after last season. Injuries have played a role, but defensive regression has been the bigger issue. Time is becoming a factor.

10. Orlando Magic (17-14)

Change: Up 8

Orlando has rebounded impressively. The Desmond Bane addition has paid off, and Anthony Black is having his best season yet. Paolo Banchero must be better for this team to take the next step.

9. Boston Celtics (19-11)

Change: Up 10

Boston has been one of the biggest surprises in the league. Even without Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown has played at a top-10 level and Joe Mazzulla has pushed all the right buttons.

8. Los Angeles Lakers (19-10)

Change: Neutral

Despite a negative point differential, the Lakers continue to win. Luka Doncic and LeBron James give them a chance every night, and the depth is better than in recent seasons.

7. Minnesota Timberwolves (20-11)

Change: Up 2

Minnesota is finding its rhythm behind Anthony Edwards. Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels have been solid, but a true point guard upgrade could elevate this team.

6. Detroit Pistons (24-7)

Change: Up 1

Despite Detroit’s stellar record and conference standing, I have them at 6. I just worry about this team’s ability to score outside of Cade Cunningham. I would love to see this team go out and acquire a quality scorer at the trade deadline.

5. Houston Rockets (18-10)

Change: Down 1

Houston is still dangerous. Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, and Amen Thompson form a high-ceiling core, even if the dominance has cooled slightly.

4. New York Knicks (21-9)

Change: Up 1

The Knicks are exactly what they hoped to be. Balanced, deep, and physical. Right now, they are my pick to come out of the Eastern Conference.

3. Denver Nuggets (22-8)

Change: Down 1

Denver’s offense remains elite, and Nikola Jokic looks like an MVP once again. Health will ultimately determine their ceiling.

2. Oklahoma City Thunder (26-5)

Change: Down 1

OKC has dominated nearly everyone outside of San Antonio. The defense is elite, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remains steady as ever.

1. San Antonio Spurs (23-7)

Change: Up 5

San Antonio earns the top spot after beating Oklahoma City three times in recent weeks. This team is ahead of schedule, and a deadline move could accelerate their title window even faster.
