How much can one matchday change? In MLS this season, quite a bit. The April 25–26 slate delivered blowouts, tight home wins, and a few results that reshaped the standings.
San Jose remains unbeaten and firmly in control of the West, while Vancouver isn’t too far behind. In the East, Nashville is riding a hot streak and has emerged as the team to beat. Chicago took a leap forward with a dominant performance, while Inter Miami dropped points at home in a match it needed to close out.
Let’s take a look at the top 10 teams in the league as the calendar turns to May.
1. San Jose Earthquakes
San Jose deserves the top spot. With 27 points through 10 games (9 wins, 1 draw), they own the best record in the league and a +19 goal differential. The 3-2 road win over St. Louis City was another example of a group that knows how to manage matches, even in difficult environments.
The foundation is the defense, one of the strongest units in MLS, while the attack continues to produce without relying on a single focal point. Right now, San Jose is the most complete team in the league, and if this level holds, they’ll be firmly in the Supporters’ Shield race.
2. Vancouver Whitecaps
Vancouver sits just behind in second. With 24 points from 9 matches (8 wins, 1 draw), they have been one of the most efficient sides in the league on both ends. The 3-1 win over Colorado reinforced what has been building for weeks: a group that presses well, stays organized, and capitalizes in transition.
Their +20 goal differential leads MLS and reflects how well they control most matches. Vancouver isn’t just finding ways to win, they’re controlling games from start to finish. At their best, they resemble the more dominant LAFC teams of recent years.
3. Nashville SC
Nashville continues to set the pace in the East. With 22 points from 9 matches, they are in the middle of their most productive stretch of the season, already up to 21 goals. The 4-2 win over Charlotte showed how dangerous this attack can be when it gets going.
Nashville pairs a reliable defense with a quick, direct counterattack that creates plenty of chances. They have been one of the steadiest teams in the conference, and their position near the top of the standings reflects it.
4. Seattle Sounders
Seattle moves into fourth after a 2-1 home win over FC Dallas. Results have trended in the right direction, particularly at Lumen Field, where they’ve built a reliable defensive base and looked dangerous on the counter.
This was another important win as Seattle continues to build momentum for a push up the Western Conference standings.
5. Chicago Fire
One of the bigger surprises of the round came from the Chicago Fire, who jumped into the Top 5 after a 5-0 win over Sporting Kansas City. It was the most convincing performance of the weekend and reinforced the progress they had been building. If that level carries forward, they have the pieces to push into the top tier in the East and apply real pressure to the leaders.
6. Inter Miami
Inter Miami sits sixth after a 1-1 home draw against New England, a missed opportunity more than anything else. They never fully took control against a weaker opponent and let points slip in a match they should have closed out.
The talent is there to compete at the top of the East, but until they find consistency, they’ll keep leaning on individual brilliance. And that will only take this team so far.
7. Los Angeles Galaxy
Coming off a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake decided by a late penalty, the Galaxy got what they wanted, but the inconsistency still makes them difficult to trust over the long run.
The technical quality is there, particularly with Marco Reus pulling the strings in midfield, but defensive issues remain. Until that side of the ball stabilizes, it will be tough to climb the standings.
8. Austin FC
Austin FC creeps into the top 10 after a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo. It was a much-needed victory that should help build confidence, particularly with how well the defense held up.
9. Portland Timbers
Portland moves into ninth after a 2-1 road win over San Diego FC. It was a strong away performance and, if that form holds, expect a push up the standings and into a more secure playoff position.
10. Real Salt Lake
Rounding out the Top 10, Real Salt Lake dropped a few notches after a 2-1 loss to the LA Galaxy. The results are still holding up, but the week-to-week inconsistency continues to hold them back. That needs to stabilize quickly if they want to stay in the playoff mix.
