NFL Teams That Need a Strong Start in 2026

NFL schedule release day always sparks overreactions. The truth is, nobody really knows which teams are about to break out and which contenders could suddenly slide backward. No league embraces parity quite like the NFL, which is why almost every fan base enters the summer believing there is a path forward.

This time last year, for example, New England looked like a team everyone wanted on the docket. The Patriots were coming off consecutive 4-13 seasons and had just changed coaches again. Then they went 14-3 and reached the Super Bowl, improving by 10 wins in a single year.

Kansas City sat on the opposite end of the spectrum. After three straight Super Bowl appearances, the Chiefs were still viewed as the AFC’s measuring stick. Instead, they collapsed to 6-11, matching the total number of losses they had accumulated across the previous three seasons combined.

Trying to predict an entire year based on opponents in May is pointless. But some schedules do place extra pressure on teams right away. Whether it is an early divisional gauntlet, brutal travel stretches, or a potentially difficult opening month, a few clubs are going to learn very quickly whether they are legitimate contenders in 2026.

Here’s a look at the NFL teams that most need a fast start.

Minnesota Vikings

Opening with back-to-back divisional games immediately raises the stakes for Minnesota. That matters even more in the NFC North, where all four teams realistically believe they can win the division.

The Vikings will face Green Bay, Chicago, and Detroit before Week 9, including matchups with the Packers and Bears during the first two weeks.

The September trip to Chicago stands out. Minnesota gets that game out of the way before winter conditions become a major factor, which is especially important for an indoor team. Detroit and Green Bay are not nearly as fortunate, with both traveling to Soldier Field closer to the holidays.

Minnesota’s final outdoor divisional game arrives Nov. 15 at Green Bay. After that, the Vikings avoid the cold-weather grind their rivals still have to battle.

That makes the opening stretch critical. Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Miami all appear beatable. If Minnesota stacks victories against that slate, the Vikings can put themselves in position while the rest of the NFC North beats each other up late in the year.

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia’s schedule is unusual in the best possible way.

The Eagles have nine home games and only seven true road contests thanks to their October matchup with Jacksonville in London. Incredibly, that London trip is the only time all month Philadelphia leaves the East Coast.

The rest of the opening slate creates a major opportunity.

Four NFC East games land within the first nine weeks, including home dates against Dallas, New York, and Washington. After Nov. 8, the Eagles will not host another divisional game.

Philadelphia also plays six of its initial 10 games at Lincoln Financial Field, and none of its early road trips extend further west than Chicago. More demanding travel spots like Arizona and San Francisco do not arrive until later in the season.

If the Eagles handle business at home and split their first four road games, they should be in excellent shape entering the stretch run.

Indianapolis Colts

If Indianapolis struggles out of the gate, things could spiral quickly.

The Colts open with Baltimore and Houston at home, separated by a trip to Kansas City. That is a brutal first three weeks for a team already facing pressure.

The Houston game looms largest.

Not only is it a critical divisional matchup, but Texans coach DeMeco Ryans has consistently gotten the better of Shane Steichen. Ryans is 5-1 against Steichen overall, including a perfect 3-0 mark in Indianapolis.

Another loss to Houston would create immediate heat around the Colts. Steichen is already under pressure, and the schedule does him no favors afterward.

Following the Texans matchup, Indianapolis travels to London for a game against Washington before road trips to Pittsburgh, Minnesota, and Jacksonville. Tennessee visiting Lucas Oil Stadium is the lone home game mixed into that span.

Last season, the Colts jumped out to an 8-2 start against some softer opponents before collapsing to 8-9 and missing the postseason entirely.

This year, Indianapolis will not have much margin for error.

Los Angeles Chargers

Few teams face a more unforgiving middle than the Chargers.

Between Week 3 and Week 10, Los Angeles travels to Buffalo, Seattle, Kansas City, the Rams, and Baltimore. The home games during that span are not much kinder either, with Denver and Houston both visiting SoFi Stadium.

There is a bye week mixed in, which the Chargers will badly need, but this is still a brutal way to navigate the heart of the season.

That is why the first two weeks matter so much.

Los Angeles begins with home games against Arizona and Las Vegas. Both teams struggled badly last season and still appear a step away from serious contention.

The Chargers do not need to dominate early. They simply need to survive the upcoming gauntlet with realistic playoff hopes intact.

The back half of the schedule becomes far more tolerable, especially with most of the tougher opponents visiting Los Angeles. If the Chargers are still alive after the Baltimore trip, they could become dangerous late in the year.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville’s opening month-and-a-half could define its season.

The Jaguars begin with Cleveland, which looks manageable on paper. After that, the path becomes much tougher. Jacksonville travels to Denver and Cincinnati, hosts New England, then spends two weeks in London facing Philadelphia and Houston.

That is a difficult draw for a team trying to keep pace in the AFC South.

The schedule eventually softens, but Houston does not face nearly the same level of difficulty or travel strain. Jacksonville edged out the Texans for the division last season, but the early slate may make repeating that difficult.

If the Jaguars want another AFC South title, they will need to be sharp immediately instead of easing into the season.
