Top 10 College Football Games of the 2026 Season

Expanding the college football playoffs to 12 teams paid dividends last season. Each round broke viewership records and delivered drama throughout, with the title game between Miami and Indiana the most-watched in 11 years. Now, in the second year of the 12-team playoff era, non-conference matchups carry more weight and draw more attention than ever.  As another season kicks off, these ten games will command the most eyes and bring the heaviest postseason implications.

10) Sat., Sep. 5: Clemson Tigers at LSU Tigers

Both programs entered last year with playoff aspirations and left disappointed. Now, in this Week 1 opener, LSU begins the Lane Kiffin era against a Clemson squad that arrives with tempered expectations following a 7-6 finish. This is an early test for two programs in transition, each looking to reestablish itself among the nation's elite.

Clemson will be the underdog, with LSU carrying an upgraded roster and an offense that should have plenty of firepower under Kiffin. The Tigers' defensive line, which ranks among the top five nationally, will be the key to slowing Sam Leavitt and a high-powered attack. Their front four is Clemson's best chance to control the game.

9) Sat., Nov. 7: Georgia Bulldogs at Ole Miss Rebels

Georgia fans have this one circled after the 39-34 playoff loss to Ole Miss. The matchup features two of the sport's top defensive minds in head coaches Kirby Smart and Pete Golding, both of whom came through Nick Saban's coaching tree. Since arriving in Athens, Smart has posted a losing record against only three opponents: Alabama (2-7), LSU (1-2), and Ole Miss (2-3).

The game hinges on whether the Rebels' pass rush can pressure Gunner Stockton and force turnovers. Georgia will attempt to establish the run with Nate Frazier against an Ole Miss defense whose run-stopping was a clear vulnerability a year ago.

8) Sat., Nov. 7: Oregon Ducks at Ohio State Buckeyes

It appears to be a “championship or bust” mindset for Oregon in 2026, and their schedule sets up favorably. This is likely their only top-10 road test of the season. Dante Moore returns at quarterback, but the biggest challenge for Dan Lanning will be rebuilding an offensive line that lost three starters to the NFL. Ohio State has won three of the last five meetings.

The winner takes a major step toward the Big Ten Championship game. The loser faces a significantly harder road in the title race.

7) Sat., Nov. 7: Miami Hurricanes at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Miami earned a playoff spot over Notre Dame partly because of an early-season head-to-head win. The Irish will be eager for payback at home in November, where their winning percentage is exceptional and the cold weather creates a genuine adjustment for visiting teams from warmer climates.

Darian Mensah arrives at Miami after showcasing elite deep-ball accuracy at Duke, and he will have dynamic targets like Malachi Toney to work with. Notre Dame's secondary, led by Leonard Moore and safety Christian Gray, is widely regarded as the nation's best. Miami may lean heavily on a ground attack led by Mark Fletcher Jr. to counter that strength.

6) Sat., Nov. 28: Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes

The best rivalry in the game will always make this list. The annual meeting in Week 13 will once again have huge implications for the Big Ten title race. Michigan controlled this series for four consecutive years before Ohio State ended the run in 2025 with a convincing 27-9 victory in Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines will likely enter as underdogs under head coach Kyle Whittingham, with their offensive ceiling heavily tied to quarterback Bryce Underwood's development. Underwood showed freshman inconsistencies in pre-snap reads and ball security that he will need to clean up. To pull off the upset, Michigan's secondary will need to be nearly perfect against a Buckeyes passing attack led by Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith.

5) Sat., Oct. 10: Georgia Bulldogs at Alabama Crimson Tide

The trenches will define this one. In the SEC championship game, Georgia established a dominant rushing attack, controlled the clock and held Alabama to minus-3 yards on 16 rushing attempts. Both programs invested heavily in their lines during the offseason, with Georgia adding depth on both sides and Alabama revamping an offensive front that struggled with run blocking.

Alabama faces a brutal October stretch around this game, traveling to Knoxville to face Tennessee before hosting Texas A&M. Winning a pair of marquee SEC games in that window would strengthen any case for a first-round bye.

4) Fri., Nov. 27: Texas Longhorns at Texas A&M Aggies

Thanksgiving weekend at Kyle Field will be loud. Since the rivalry resumed in 2024, Texas has won both meetings, including a late-season victory in College Station with Arch Manning at the helm. This edition arrives with legitimate postseason stakes for both programs.

Texas added depth around Manning in the offseason, bringing in running back Raleek Brown from Arizona State and receiver Cam Coleman from Auburn. The Aggies will look to collapse the pocket early, targeting Manning's tendency to turn the ball over under pressure. Surviving this challenge on the road would go a long way toward cementing Texas as a legitimate top seed.

3) Sat., Sep. 12: Ohio State Buckeyes at Texas Longhorns

Their first meeting was a tight, low-scoring defensive battle that Ohio State won 14-7, featuring Sayin and Manning in their first significant college starts. Both arrive in 2026 with a full season of experience behind them. Sayin finished as a Heisman finalist and Manning closed the year on a strong run, going 6-1 in his final seven.

Containing Jeremiah Smith will be a priority for Texas, having held him to 43 yards in the first meeting. Keeping consistent pressure on Sayin in the pocket gives the Longhorns their best chance, as they limited Ohio State to just 203 total yards a year ago.

2) Sat., Sep. 19: LSU Tigers at Ole Miss Rebels

Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford in Week 3 will bring one of the most charged atmospheres of the entire season. The relationship between Kiffin and his former program has grown openly contentious, with Kiffin recently drawing attention for comments about LSU's recruiting advantages due to greater diversity. Beyond the off-field noise, this is also both teams' first SEC game of 2026, with LSU looking to avenge a road loss to the Rebels.

The key on-field battle will be between the quarterbacks. Sam Leavitt takes over for LSU while Trinidad Chambliss returns for Ole Miss under new offensive coordinator John Baker, who will blend air raid concepts with an uptempo running game. On the other sideline, Kiffin's high-velocity system is always fun to watch, and this one should be a shootout.

1) Sat., Oct. 17: Ohio State Buckeyes at Indiana Hoosiers

This serves as a rematch of the Big Ten Championship game, where Indiana pulled off a 13-10 upset for its first-ever conference title. The Hoosiers' defensive front seven was the difference, holding Ohio State to 58 rushing yards and sacking Julian Sayin five times.

Ohio State's offensive line must be better this time around. The Buckeyes struggled with edge pressure throughout the postseason and will face another stern test against an Indiana defense that proved capable of disrupting everything they wanted to do.

For Indiana, the biggest storyline is obvious. Heisman winner and Bloomington legend Francisco Mendoza is gone, and Josh Hoover now inherits the pressure that comes with leading the defending national champions.

A rematch of the Big Ten Championship game. Ohio State on the road against the defending national champions. They don't get much bigger than this.
